Book Recommendations

From time to time, I get asked for recommendations for training and reference materials for SharePoint, so today I want to point out three books, in no particular order.

  1. The Big Blue Book of Farm Administration or rather “Microsoft Office SharePoint Server Administrator’s Companion” by Bill English and friends. When people ask me questions about server sizing and server monitoring, I go to this book. This book and TechNet’s MOSS TechCenter at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/office/sharepoint/default.mspx are a Farm Administrator’s best friend.
  2. Inside WSS 3.0, by Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson. I’m reading this now. I’ve blogged before about how useful I’ve found Ted’s information, and that I got him to autography my copy of this book at ODC 2008.
  3. New on the scene is Robert Bogue’s latest book, The SharePoint Shepherd’s Guide for End Users. Check out the Table of Contents at http://www.sharepointshepherd.com/Samples/FrontMatter.pdf and you will see that it’s full of step by step guidance for common tasks users of collaboration sites (e.g. Team Sites) will want to know. It’s also covers tasks of interest to site collection administrators.
    1. You can also license this book’s content for use in creating your own training materials, as I understand it. Contact Robert through the SharePoint Shepherd website to find out more (tell him you heard about his book from me).

That’s it for now.
